The future of Guaranteed Capacity

Podium discussion

Electricity comes out of the socket, gas from the pipe - up until now, security of supply has been taken for granted. With the Energiewende, structures are changing, and with them the associated responsibilities of the companies. In the future, security of supply will play an explicit role in a newly designed electricity market structure and in the gas market, and this role must be determined and priced. Customers themselves will also be able to decide what value they place on a reliable energy supply. Closely associated with this is the demand for storage options. Not everything that is technically feasible is also commercially viable. With a view to 2030, the aim is to reregulate the allocation of roles and responsibilities "securely" and develop flexible products.

  • Energy market structure - who pays for the reserve capacity?
  • Security of supply as a product component - how do customers view this?
  • Flexibilities - what makes demand-side shutdown potential attractive?

Secure Resources: The International Perspective

Podium discussion

Despite all efforts to achieve strong independence, Europe's security of supply is still being decided upon outside Europe. This is because the EU still depends on gas and oil supplies from various regions around the world. However, many of these natural resource regions are increasingly troubled by political crises. Strategies for increased diversification are therefore top of the political agenda in Brussels. Among other things, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is being discussed as an alternative to pipeline supplies. The low oil price is currently helping the European economy to grow. However, in the long term, this will increase the risk to the security of supply, as a reduction in the demand for energy can affect political stability in the producing countries.

  • What role do non-EU states play in the European concept of security of supply?
  • Can a European energy union reduce the dependency on resources from crisis regions?
  • How are other energy systems developing around the globe?
